Why is duration different from effort?

Duration and effort are two different things. Duration is the difference between one point in time and another. The duration of a working week is generally five days. Effort is the amount of time it takes to do a certain task. So if it takes two hours to do a job, then the effort is two hours.

Consider a person working for a week on a task. The duration is five days, and if the person works for a full week, the effort is also five days - called person days (Assume here that a defined Folder week has the same number of hours as the contract hours for the staff that work on it). However, if we double our effort, and add another person to this same task and for the same amount of time, our duration remains the same at five days, but effort is now at 10 days person days.
