There are 2 distinctly different folder types within MetriQ - Folders and User Folders

Note: As a default, MetriQ will only show the option to create User Folders unless the Show Only "User" Folder check box option is unchecked in the settings/options window (see also General Options).

MetriQ timekeeping Folders are containers that can contain any number of sub-folders, both Folders and User Folders. Folders cannot however contain icons.
MetriQ stopwatch User Folders, like Folders can also contain any number of sub-folders, but in addition can also contain Icons, which are used to time how long you use a piece of software or file.

Why the 2 types?

First and foremost MetriQ is a software package designed to measure how much time is spent by a member of staff using a particular software package or file. From this time and depending on who used which files and their role when working on the file, MetriQ is able to calculate a dollar value charge-out rate for the time spent doing a particular job, giving a true calculation of what the job has actually cost to complete.

So if Client A has Job 1 and Job 2, MetriQ calculates the cost based on the time like so:

MetriQ stop watchClient A

MetriQ tracking Job 1. Time Recorded: 1 hour 30mintutes. Charge out Rate $10/Hour. Cost $15.

MetriQ logging Job 2. Time Recorded: 2 hours. Charge out Rate $40/Hour. Cost $80.

In this example all time collected has been on the User Folders Job 1 and 2. No time was recorded for Client A, because Client is part of the structure used to organize jobs for that client and as such has no requirement to collect time. For this reason, Client A is represented in MetriQ by a Folder, so staff members cannot add icons by accident. If this were not the case, and icons were added to Client A and timing logged, come time to bill the client there would be no way of knowing just what the collected time data was for.

So in essence, the yellow folder is a symbolic representation of the business structure employed by the organization, whereas the blue folders represent the actual timing points, where timing icons can be added and opened from. Usually, the blue User Folder will not have any sub-folders of its own; however, this is not a hard and fast rule, and should you require, you can add both Folders and User Folders to this structure.

What is the User Folder Panel?

The User Folder Panel is the actual surface onto which you will add your icons. To open the User Folder Panel, select and press a blue User Folder from the Folder view in the main MetriQ page, and you will be presented with an empty surface onto which you can add as many icons as you wish.

User Folder Panel View

The User Folder Panel can be viewed in one of 4 different ways:

Large Icons
The default display where all timing icons are 32x32 pixels in size, and the icons name and timing data is displayed under the icon. Each icon can be moved around the screen independently or tiled across the screen in rows. Icons cannot be dragged and dropped onto other User Folders. Only one icon at a time can be selected.
Small Icons
Icons are tiled across the screen. The icon timing details are not displayed. More than one icon can be selected, cut/copied and pasted onto a different User Folder Panel. Icons can be dragged and dropped onto different User Folder Panels.

To change the view at any time, right click the mouse on the User Folder Panel and select the desired view.

Note:
In list-view display mode, MetriQ shows the status image on the left hand side of the application's icon image. Only one image is displayed, and in the following order of precedence {Persistent, Active, Idle, Cool-off, None}.

How do I create a new Folder or User Folder?

In the Folder View, right click on an existing Folder or User Folder and select New > Folder, New > User Folder, Use a Template or Wizard.

To create a new top level Folder or User Folder, right click in the Folder View anywhere EXCEPT on an existing Folder and select New Folder Wizard.

Using the Wizard to crate a new top-level Folder or User Folder, you will be prompted to enter the required information to create that new Folder (see also Folder Wizard). However, a newly created Sub-Folder or User Sub-Folder, will always take on the same properties as its parent Folder or User Folder (see also Folder Properties).

Folder Status Settings:

There are 4 status settings for Folders within MetriQ, changing the visibility of the main Folder view and filtering out folders that are no longer in use or are used only on a temporary basis. These are:

Archived: A Folder or User Folder that is complete and is to be files as Archived.
Complete: A Folder or User Folder that is complete.
Ongoing: A regular Folder or User Folder.
Template: A Folder or User Folder used as a cookie cutter to produce any number of stock structures. Simply build the business structure that you require and copy/paste this model again and again to produce duplicate structures that you rename.

Creating a Template:

Use the Folder wizard to create a top-level Folder or User Folder. Continue to add to this Folder any additional sub-folders required by your business structure. Once complete, again select the top-level folder, right click your mouse and choose the Folder Properties option from the drop down context menu. When the properties window opens, change the status of the folder to Template.
