Sometimes, you may find it necessary to elect an icon to collect ALL timing data for a given User Folder, regardless of what other software is in use. Such a scenario might occur if you are using a piece of software, but find yourself multi-tasking between different activities.

Consider you are on the telephone, and timing the conversation using a Timed Event (see Timed Event). While speaking with a client, you find that you need to open Explorer from within MetriQ so that you can log onto your company web site to retrieve your client's customer information. In this instance, you may decide that all timing should continue to be collected by the Timed Event you are currently using. This would be an ideal opportunity for you to use the Persistence feature.

Making an Icon Persistent:
To make an Icon persistent, first select the icon you wish to be made persistent, and then press the MetriQ keeps good time Icon located on top of the Icon Panel on the main MetriQ window. (Note: you have to be on a User Folder to see this button - see User Folders). Alternatively, right click on the selected Icon and select the Persistence option from the drop down context menu. When the icon is in persistence, the Persistence image Open your ears and listen to MetriQ keeping time. will be shown, attached to the icon as it times (see Timing Icons).

When an icon has been set to Persistence, all timing will be captured by that icon. This remains true until you cancel persistence for that icon or change to a different User Folder - which is when MetriQ will ask you the following:

Stop Persistence: Removes persistence from the current persistent icon. After this action, no icons will be persistent.
Transfer Persistence: Transfer persistence to the same Icon on the current User Folder. Persistence will be transferred from the original persistent icon to an icon of the same name on the selected User Folder. If that Icon does not currently exists, a new icon will be created, added to the current folder, and then made persistent.
Return Home: MetriQ will return you to the User Folder that holds the current Persistent Icon.

Canceling Persistence:
To cancel the Persistence on an icon do one of the following.

1. Select the Icon that is currently persistent, and press the MetriQ times your work button located on top of the icon Panel or
2. Select the Icon that is currently persistent and right click to bring up the context menu. Choose Persistent from the menu or
3. Select another different icon, and press the I hate timesheets button located on the top of the icon Panel or right click your mouse over the selected icon and choose Persistent.

Transfer Persistence Alert:

When an application or Timed Event has been made Persistent, and you move to another User Folder, MetriQ will prompt you to decide the following:

Transfer Persistence: Time Tracking Software

Figure 1: Transfer Persistence

Stop Persistence: When selected, MetriQ will cancel persistence for the current software application or file.

Transfer Persistence: When selected MetriQ will move persistence from the current application or file on the previously selected User Folder and move it to the currently selected User Folder (creating a new icon if required). Persistence, and hence timing for that Icon will then continue.

Return Home: MetriQ will return you to the folder the original persistence Icon was opened from. In this example, Home is the User Folder B.

Cancel: With this option, Persistence will continue as is, on the previously selected folder (in this example, on User Folder B).
